The Mayo Clinic’s century-plus commitment to physician leadership is crucial to its long-term success in health care, research, and education.

“This helps ensure a continued focus on our primary value, ‘The needs of the patient come first,’ ” the Mayo Clinic website says.

The facility, based in Rochester, Minnesota, has been near the top of annual hospital rankings by U.S. News & World Report, coming in at No. 1 for the third time in four years. And for the first time in the ratings’ 28-year history, Mayo Clinic placed more than one campus in the honor roll - with the Phoenix, Arizona, site landing at No. 20.

Both campuses’ employ physicians as chief executives. The same came be said for other perennials atop the list, Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, Johns Hopkins Hospital in Maryland and Massachusetts General Hospital. In fact, 13 of the 26 executives credited in the top 20 are also physicians.

(Redonda Miller, MD, MBA, president at Johns Hopkins Hospital, has been a member of the American Association for Physician Leadership since 2005.)

For over 45 years.

The American Association for Physician Leadership has helped physicians develop their leadership skills through education, career development, thought leadership and community building.

The American Association for Physician Leadership (AAPL) changed its name from the American College of Physician Executives (ACPE) in 2014. We may have changed our name, but we are the same organization that has been serving physician leaders since 1975.
